The Rainbow Flag Award

The LGBT+ Service Nottinghamshire is proud to be

an accredited partner organisation in delivering

The Rainbow Flag Award to youth organisations

in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework that focuses on positive LGBTQ+ inclusion and visibility in youth settings: These settings include:

  • primary schools

  • secondary schools

  • colleges and sixth forms

  • SEND schools

  • all-through schools

  • youth clubs and organisations

Developed by The Proud Trust in collaboration with other LGBTQ+ youth organisations, The Rainbow Flag Award encourages a whole organisation approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion, as well as developing strategies to effectively challenge and combat homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying.

How does it work?

The Rainbow Flag Award is a year-long process of reflection, self-assessment, ongoing monitoring and feedback.

The award begins with starter training that covers everything you need to know about the Rainbow Flag Award as well as some LGBTQ+ awareness training. From here you begin a process of reflection and self-assessment of the quality of LGBTQ+ inclusion in your setting in regards to six areas of your work that will be set out in your Rainbow Flag Award handbook.

As you work towards your Rainbow Flag Award you will receive ongoing support via phone and email, with online ‘in-person’ meets. As part of your membership you will also have access to the Members’ Area of this website which includes a personalised organisation profile, best practice examples, a video library, signposting, and more.

Once you have gained your Rainbow Flag Award, it is valid for a further two years (at no extra cost), with options for renewal available to you at the end of the three-year cycle.

Supporting local

The Rainbow Flag Award utilises local LGBTQ+ youth organisations as delivery partners in it’s growth model. This is a core guiding value of the award, which means it has an understanding of local communities and their needs.

Any monies generated by this scheme then help support, often underfunded, LGBTQ+ youth provision locally.
