A Day in the Life of an Office Manager

Hi everyone! My name is Harley, I use she/her pronouns, and I’m the Office Manager at The Centre Place. Lots of people ask me what my job is really like, so I thought I’d share a day in my life. Being an Office Manager might sound serious, but it’s also fun, busy, and full of surprises!

My day usually starts with a nice cup of tea and a friendly chat with my work colleagues. Beginning the morning with a smile always makes everything feel easier.

Once I’ve caught up with everyone, I log onto my laptop, check my emails, and see what needs to be done for the day. A big part of my role is keeping an eye on emails, checking that important tasks have been completed, and helping my colleague, Zoe, if she has anything that needs finishing. I also look after accounts and payroll, and I always make sure to ask my team if anyone needs a hand—teamwork makes everything run smoothly.

One of my most important responsibilities is making sure the office runs well. That means checking that no invoices are left unpaid, keeping track of our accounts, and looking out for new funding opportunities for our service.

It might sound like a lot, but I actually love it! My favourite part of the job is working on the accounts and payroll. I’ve always been interested in numbers, and when I’m doing that kind of work, I feel completely focused and “in the zone.”

When I first started, there was one big challenge: getting used to sitting down for most of the day. I came from much more active jobs, and my Apple Watch kept telling me to stand up! But now I’m used to it, and honestly, I really enjoy every part of my job—especially because of the amazing team I work with.

To stay motivated during the day, I rely on plenty of cups of tea, regular screen breaks, and a bit of fresh air. It really helps your eyes and your mind reset.

If anyone out there is thinking about becoming an Office Manager one day, my advice is to be ready for long days and not much movement. Make sure you take proper breaks, and most importantly, have a passion for what you’re doing. It’s not just sitting at a laptop—you need to want to learn, support others, and keep growing.

There are a few behind‑the‑scenes tasks that people might not know about. For example, I work on data sets for our service and help manage funding to make sure money is spent correctly. I’m always keeping an eye on the budget and looking out for any new funding opportunities that could support our work.

One of the most rewarding parts of my day is seeing how passionate everyone in the team is. The people I work with genuinely care about what they do, and being around that energy every day is amazing.

If something unexpected happens at work, we always come together as a team, talk things through, and figure out a solution. I couldn’t do my job without my colleagues; sometimes your mind just goes blank, and being able to ask questions or bounce ideas off each other really helps.

Of course, I can’t forget my go‑to work snacks—plenty of tea, and sometimes biscuits or chocolate. To stay focused, I make sure to step away from my screen during breaks so my eyes don’t get too tired. If I had to describe my day in three words, I’d say it’s fun, busy, and eye‑opening. And my favourite thing about working at The Centre Place? The people. Always. We have such an amazing team, and I feel really lucky to be part of it.

Working as an Office Manager might sound like a big grown‑up job, but it’s full of teamwork, learning, cups of tea, and moments that make me smile. I love what I do—and who knows, maybe one day you’ll work in an office too!
