Young Carers Action Day 🌟
Young Carers Action Day is an important moment to recognise and celebrate the commitment of children and young people across the UK who support loved ones with physical or mental health needs, disability, or substance misuse. Many of these young carers don't realise the extent of their responsibilities — or that they are young carers.
📊 Understanding the Scale in Nottinghamshire
1,735 young carers (aged under 18) were identified in Nottinghamshire County in the 2021 Census, alongside 695 in Nottingham City. [carersspacenotts.com]
Of these, around 200 county-based and 80 city-based young carers provide 50+ hours of care per week. [carersspacenotts.com]
Among secondary school-aged young people, about 1 in 12 have a caring role, and nearly 1 in 5 will have cared for someone by the time they reach 18 years old. [nottingham...ire.gov.uk]
Why Awareness and Support Matter
💔 Mental Health & Wellbeing
Young carers face significantly worse mental health outcomes compared to their peers:
According to the RCPCH, 40% report feeling sad, 25% lonely, and 50% angry in the previous week. [stateofchi...cpch.ac.uk]
Research indicates that 56% say their mental health has worsened due to their caring role, with 30% having thought about self-harm. [static.acamh.org]
📚 Education & Life Chances
Young carers are more likely to miss school, experience bullying, and struggle academically due to their responsibilities. [stateofchi...cpch.ac.uk], [icchnr.org]
They also face reduced participation in hobbies and social activity, often missing out on normal childhood experiences. [childrenss...ety.org.uk], [actionforc...ren.org.uk]

🧠 Mental Health & Wellbeing Sessions
Our sessions focus on stress management, building resilience, and teaching practical strategies to maintain emotional health.
🤝 Mentoring
Through one-to-one mentoring, we empower young people to set goals, explore their potential, and feel less isolated.
💬 What Debs, Our Young Carers Champion, Says
“Young carers often put everyone else first and forget about themselves. At The Centre Place, we make sure they know they’re not alone — support is here whenever they need it. We work closely with Tuvida - following their training, promoting the practical and emotional support that they can offer as well.”
