A Day in My Life as a Counsellor

My name is Debs, I use she/her pronouns. I’ve been a counsellor with Talkzone for four years now, and I can honestly say no two days are ever quite the same. That’s one of the things I really enjoy about the job — every day brings something different, and every young person has their own story to tell.
“Counselling isn’t about fixing people; it’s about giving them the space to find their own voice again.” — Modern therapeutic saying
Starting My Day
First thing in the morning, I switch on my laptop and check my emails, just to see if anything’s changed overnight. Then I check my phone in case any clients have been in touch — you never know what might have popped up.
After that, I go through my diary to see who I’ve got in. If I’ve got a new client coming, I like to get all their paperwork sorted. It helps me feel organised and ready to go.
What My Workday Usually Looks Like
Most days, I have four sessions booked in. In between them, I write up my notes, do the admin that comes with each young person’s support, and fill in monitoring forms so the service can see what issues are coming up.
The most important part of my day is keeping those notes accurate — and if I have any safeguarding concerns, that goes straight to the top of the list, no question.
What I Love About the Job
My favourite part is definitely the face-to-face work. Getting to know young people, adapting how I work depending on what they need, and sometimes getting creative — it’s honestly what makes the job special. Seeing someone gain confidence or take positive steps forward is so good to see.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is that final session with a young person. Looking back on how far they’ve come is really lovely. Sometimes they don’t even realise how much they’ve changed until we talk it through — and seeing their face when they realise how much has changed for them id the best feeling.
When Things Don’t Go to Plan
Counselling isn’t always predictable. Things can come up out of the blue that need dealing with straightaway. Being flexible and organised really helps me keep calm and handle those moments without feeling thrown off.
What People Don’t Always Realise
A lot of people don’t realise just how strict confidentiality is in counselling. Everything that’s said in the room stays in the room — we follow very clear rules to protect young people.
And honestly, I couldn’t do this job without good supervision. It helps me reflect, grow, and stay grounded in the work.
Keeping Myself Focused
I drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep my energy up. I also use mindfulness and meditation — they really help me stay centred and ready for whatever the day brings.
If I had to sum up my day in three words, I’d choose:
Listening,
Supporting,
Empowering.
Why I Love Working at Talkzone
The team makes such a difference. Everyone’s friendly, supportive, and always happy to make time for a chat if you need one. It’s a lovely environment to work in — warm, welcoming, and full of heart.
Thinking About Becoming a Counsellor?
My advice is simple: go for it. There’s nothing quite like knowing you’ve helped someone through a difficult time. It’s a meaningful, rewarding career — and I’m really glad I chose it.
